Inflammatory Bowel Disease – Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment
Summary: Inflammatory bowel disease is a group of disorders related to the intestine which leads to inflammatory symptoms. It is caused due to the immune reaction of the body against its own tissue which leads to flaring up inside the intestine. It can be controlled and treated by studying the symptoms and the severity of the area infected.
IBD is an idiopathic disease which involves inflammatory condition of the colon and small intestine due to its own immune system. It is a condition where the intestine becomes red and swollen due to the immune reaction of the body against the intestinal tissue. This disease is classified into two major types. They are Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). The Ulcerative Colitis is limited to the large intestine whereas the Crohn’s disease can be in any part between the mouth to the anus of the gastrointestinal tract. Either is very painful.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease Symptoms and Signs:
It is a chronic disease which flares up and reflects symptoms in time. The symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting, rectal bleeding, diarrhea, weight loss, anemia, severe internal cramps, risk of colon cancer, toxic megacolon, fistulae and perianal disease. The symptoms may range from mild to severe based on the part of the intestinal tract involved.
The symptoms can also be related to parts or organs other than the intestine. However, it affects only a small percentage of the patients with IBD. The extra intestinal complications include arthritis, skin conditions, inflammation of the eye, bone loss, liver and kidney disorders.
Diagnosis for Inflammatory Bowel Disease:
You can visit a doctor if you are sure about the symptoms listed above. However, tests will be conducted to determine IBD. The same symptoms are also applicable for irritable bowel syndrome, which is a different disorder.
Tests for IBD include Barium X-ray, Sigmoidoscopy, Colonoscopy and Upper endoscopy. An examination of stool and complete blood count come under non diagnosis tests.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease Treatment
Treatment for IBD depends on the type and the level of severity. A treatment is approached in order to reduce the inflammatory response which allows the tissue to heal and relieve from the symptoms of diarrhea and abdominal pain. Medical treatment is started to reduce the flare ups once the symptoms are under control.
is treated using Mesalazine, antibiotics and surgery. Mesalazine is more helpful in case of Ulcerative colitis and antibiotics are helpful to treat Crohn’s disease. A surgery is approached in extreme cases of Inflammatory bowel disease which require the removal of the affected part. In order to cure IBD, a step wise procedure in applied and the intensity of the drugs may be increased if a previous step failed. The primary aim of the treatment is to reduce inflammation using drugs with high inflammatory effects. Once it is achieved, a lighter dose of the drugs is used to cure IBD completely. Seek medical attention if you believe your experiencing this.
